Advancing Health Equity for Black Men

The John Henry Health Equity Institute is building a national movement grounded in the ideas, evidence, and vision outlined in The John Henry Health Equity Playbook: A Four-Year Health Policy Agenda for Black Men.

This work recognizes a simple truth: improving health outcomes for Black men requires more than clinical care. It demands coordinated action across policy, community, research, and practice to address the systems that shape physical health, mental health, economic stability, and family and community well-being.

Joining the movement means helping translate this framework into sustained, real-world impact.

What This Movement Is About

Inspired by the Playbook, our work advances health equity for Black men across three interconnected pillars:

Physical and Mental

Health

Expanding access to culturally responsive care, addressing chronic disease and mental health inequities, and strengthening pathways into the health professions.

Housing, Education, and Economic Stability

Advancing the foundational conditions that make health possible, including safe housing, educational opportunity, workforce development, and wealth-building pathways.

Community Empowerment and Family Well-Being

Strengthening families, supporting fathers, preventing violence, and ensuring communities have the tools and voice needed to shape policies that affect their lives.

Together, these pillars reflect a comprehensive approach to health equity that is evidence-based, community-informed, and focused on long-term systems change.
