About the Institute & Playbook
The John Henry Institute is a national nonprofit committed to advancing the health, well-being, and policy inclusion of Black men through advocacy, innovation, and strategic partnerships. We work at the intersection of health, data, and justice to dismantle structural barriers and foster community-led transformation.
The Playbook is our flagship publication—a four-year policy agenda designed to improve Black men’s health through targeted action in three pillars: physical and mental health, housing and economic stability, and civic empowerment. It is both a strategic roadmap and a call to action for change-makers across sectors.
The name honors the legendary Black steel-driver who symbolizes resilience and strength under pressure. His story mirrors the systemic burdens Black men still face today—and the need for structural change that doesn’t cost them their lives.
